The lowest 10% of nurse practitioners earn less than $66,330, whereas the top 10% of nurse practitioners earn more than $161,030.
Hours and Work Environment
Most nurse practitioners work 40 hours per week. They work in hospitals, urgent care centers, doctors’ offices, nursing homes and other medical facilities. Some nurse practitioners holding doctoral degrees may work in research facilities or universities. Nurse practitioners are often required to work overtime, nights and weekends.
Factors Impacting Salary
There are a variety of factors that impact salary including educational background, specialized certifications and experience. Nurse practitioners entering the field may necessarily expect to earn less than experienced practitioners who have worked in the field for years.
- Education
Nurse practitioners must obtain a master’s degree, become a registered nurse, pass a national certification exam and complete additional licensing requirements. Some nurse practitioners obtain their Doctor of Nursing Practice or a Ph.D. Nurse practitioners who have earned an advanced doctoral degree may substantially enhance their earnings capacity.
- Specialty Certifications
Nurse practitioners may obtain additional certifications in order to enhance their marketability and increase their knowledge base in a specialized field of practice.
Job Outlook
The outlook for employment of nurse practitioners is excellent. Employment is expected to increase by 34% between 2012 and 2022. It is estimated that the need for nurse practitioners will lead to new nurse practitioner positions during that time period. This increase in nurse practitioner jobs is due to the expectation of increased medical needs in an aging population as well as an increased emphasis on preventive care.
