There are 28 accredited veterinary medicine schools in the United States. The accrediting body for veterinarian schools is the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). In order to become a veterinarian, one must complete a doctor of veterinary medicine program and pass a licensing examination. Entrance into a veterinarian medicine program typically requires a minimum of two years of undergraduate coursework; however, many students possess a bachelor’s degree.

1. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine

Cornell’s veterinary medicine program was named #1 by US News in 2012. The program was created over 150 years ago when the founder of the university, Ezra Cornell, insisted that a program of veterinary medicine be established.
Located in Ithica, New York, there are 211 faculty members in the college and 360 students enrolled in the DVM program. Entrance into the DVM program requires 60 hours of undergraduate coursework and the completion of prerequisites.
The doctor of veterinary medicine degree requires four years of study post baccalaureate. Students in the program attend classes and participate in clinical rotations to prepare for a career as a veterinarian. For students seeking to specialize, there are various internships and residency programs available.

2. The University of California-Davis The School of Veterinary Medicine

Foundedin1948, The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of California Davis was ranked #2 by US News in 2012 and has been at the forefront in the development of veterinary medicine.
The university offers a 4 year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program, a Master of Preventative Veterinary Medicine, and 17 other graduate programs for those interested in the field of veterinary medicine. Currently, there are 524 students enrolled in the DVM program, and the School of Veterinary Medicine employs 300 faculty members.
Admission to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program requires a bachelor’s degree in any major as long as the prerequisites for the DVM program are met.

3. Colorado State University The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences

The College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado is one of the best veterinary programs in the country. The school was ranked #3 by US News in 2012.
Each year, 138 students are granted admission to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. The college offers students the opportunity to study veterinary medicine with exceptional faculty members, and provides training not only in the classroom, but through clinical rotations in the Colorado State University Veterinary teaching hospital.

3. North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine

One of the newer veterinary medicine programs, the doctor of veterinary medicine program at North Carolina State University in Raleigh is one of the top veterinary programs in the United States. In 2012, the program was ranked #3 by US News. The school offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree as well as masters and doctoral degrees in several different areas of veterinary medicine. The school is fully accredited by American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education.
There are 358 students in the DVM program and 149 faculty members in the department. The university offers its students residency and research opportunities in The House Officer Program and Clinician Scientist Training Program, and students can also gain valuable experience working with farm animals in the Teaching Animal Unit.

5. Ohio State University The College of Veterinary Medicine

Created in 1885, The College of Veterinary Medicine was ranked #5 by US News in 2012. The school awards a 4 year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. In order to apply, prospective students must complete 3-4 years of undergraduate coursework. Currently, there are 545 DVM students and 105 faculty members in The College of Veterinary Medicine.
The university has the largest Veterinary Medical Center with a Clinical Trials Office in the United States. The school also emphasizes the study of animal and human health issues.

5. University of Pennsylvania The School of Veterinary Medicine

Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and founded in 1884, the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine was ranked as the 5th best veterinarian program in the country by US News. Penn Vet as the school is called, contains two campuses where students may study in either a rural setting or city atmosphere. The location in Philadelphia houses an animal hospital for domestic animals, while the rural location’s hospital focuses on the care of farm animals.
The renowned faculty of the school concentrates their research in the areas of cancer, infectious disease, regenerative medicine, and neuroscience. Although the completion of a bachelor’s degree is not necessary to gain acceptance into the competitive program, it is recommended.

5. University of Wisconsin—Madison School of Veterinary Medicine

Located in Madison, Wisconsin, the University of Wisconsin—Madison School of Veterinary Medicine was ranked #5 by US News in 2012. The school has degree programs in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and a graduate program in Comparative Biomedical Sciences (CBMS). Each year, 87 new students are admitted to the DVM program. Those wanting to gain acceptance as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students need to complete at least 60 credit hours at the undergraduate level and take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
Within the School of Veterinary Medicine, there are 4 different departments: Comparative Biosciences, Pathobiological Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Surgical Sciences. Each department is made up of faculty who teach in the different degree programs.

8.Texas A&M University—College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences

The school was founded in 1916 and fosters an environment of compassionate care and a commitment to importance of veterinary medicine. The Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences was ranked #8 by US News and World Report, and it is one of the largest veterinary medicine colleges with over 527 students enrolled in its Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program.
The program is dedicated to research, and the school has cloned more animals than any other in the world. In addition, the school houses the Michael E. DeBakey Institute for Cardiovascular Sciences.
Those wanting to apply to the college must have completed at least 58 credits of undergraduate coursework.

9. Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University in East Lansing was established in 1855. The college is one of the best in the nation and was ranked #9 by US News. The school boasts top notch facilities for its students, and the college’s veterinary teaching hospital has one of the largest caseloads in the United States which provides valuable experience for students in such areas as infectious diseases and cancer care.
The school offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. Access into the program is highly competitive, so it is important to maintain an excellent undergraduate GPA in science prerequisite courses. Although a bachelor’s degree is not required to gain entry into the program, the majority of students admitted held a bachelor’s degree.

9. University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine

The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine was established in 1946. The school was ranked #9 by US News, and only accepts 112 students each year. There are currently 173 faculty members in the college, most of whom hold a PhD in addition to a DVM. The school offers a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree as well as several other master’s degree and PhD programs.
The College of Veterinary Medicine houses facilities dedicated to the advancement of veterinary medicine and the study of diseases affecting animals and humans. In addition, the college boasts state of the art facilities such as the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center and Veterinary Medicine Teaching Hospital.
Entrance into the rigorous 4 year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program is competitive. A bachelor’s degree is not necessary to gain admission; however, 95% of applicants accepted have earned a bachelor’s degree.
