How much does a real estate agent make? According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for for real estate agents was $39,140 in May 2012 and is based primarily on sales commission. This means that an agent doesn’t earn any money until he or she sells a property.
A real estate agent salary depends on several factors. First, there is the housing market. When the process of buying and selling houses is slow due to the economy, real estate agents tend to make less money. In addition, experienced agents with an established clientele will make more than those just starting out in the field.
Another reason why some agents make more than others is the market they work in. Those agents who sell pricier properties will make a higher commission than those who send lower end properties. After a real estate agent has been working in the field for a year or more, depending on the state, he or she can apply to become a real estate broker. This means agents can work for themselves rather than having to work for a real estate company. Obtaining a broker’s license can further increase an agent’s pay, since the median real estate broker salary is $52,910.
