How much does an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) make? For 2012, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that EMTs, including Paramedics, earned a median annual income of about $31,000, or nearly $15 an hour.
An EMT salary compensates for strenuous working conditions that include long hours, plenty of overtime, and rotating on-call shifts. Most entry-level EMTs have the option of upgrading their skill set to earn a higher income. This typically means undergoing extensive additional training to become a paramedic. Additionally, those who advance to leadership positions may be eligible for higher pay. A breakdown of the full process of becoming an emergency medical technician can be found here.
