How much does a dialysis technician make? Dialysis technicians are professionals in the medical field who work with patients experiencing kidney problems or kidney failure. Dialysis technicians attend to patients before, during and after dialysis treatments. They also operate the dialysis machines that remove excess water, salt and waste from patients’ blood. The process to become a dialysis technician typically involves attending an accredited dialysis certificate program at a community or state college or a vocational school. Salary
The Bureau of Labor Statistics groups dialysis technicians into the larger category of medical and laboratory technicians. According to BLS, the median salary per year for medical laboratory technicians was $37,240 in 2012. The lowest 10 percent of technicians earned $24,790 or less per year, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $57,710.
Factors Impacting Salary
The years a dialysis technician has been working affects the salary he or she will command. Those techs who have been working four years or fewer make less money than those who have been in the field for five years or more.
Geographic Location and Salary
In some states, the dialysis tech salary is higher than others. The states where dialysis technicians earn the most money are Illinois, Pennsylvania, Arizona and Colorado. The lowest paying state is Tennessee. .
Schedule and Work Environment
Most dialysis technicians work full time in hospitals. Since hospitals are open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, dialysis technicians in hospitals work a variety of days and hours including, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Some technicians work in outpatient clinics and others travel to patients’ homes to give them dialysis. Those employed in these areas will often work schedules based on the hours of the facility or the needs of the patients in their home.
Job Outlook
The employment outlook for all of those in the general field of medical laboratory technician is expected to much faster than other careers. The rate of growth is estimated to be 30 percent between the years of 2012 and 2022. The reasons for the rapid growth in the industry is due to the increase in the aging population of the United States. They will have a need for more laboratory procedures including dialysis. Furthermore, the new healthcare legislation will enable many people to access healthcare that could not in the past. Therefore, the need for trained medical laboratory technicians will increase.
